Thanks for your quick reply. So, if I understand you correctly, in the future there *will* exist multiple files with the same format (i.e. "VBR MP3" or "64Kbps MP3") for the same track, at least for older items?

And, as a rule of thumb, would you suggest for players that want to stream audio files in MP3 format to choose the file named [filename].mp3, basically ignoring the "format" meta data?

yes there will be multiple files that are some flavor of mp3 if they already exist and in the case of a few collections like Librivox which have a unique derive path to create lower bitrate formats in addition to higher rate vbr mp3 files.

i would recommend [filename].mp3 as the mp3 choice in general. there may be some corner cases where uploaders have created their own mp3 files in which case the system will not derive a new one. we can't know if those mp3s are web/player friendly.

Well, thanks for the clarification. I'll have to think about how to handle this in my client, though, so I may come up with additional questions in the next couple of days...
